Women and Heart Disease

While many women fear that they will die from cancer, heart disease remains the number one killer of men and women in the United States. In fact, heart disease kills almost twice as many women as all cancers, including breast cancer.

Here are some facts you should know about how the #1 killer of women, heart disease, affects women every day.

• Heart disease claims the lives of 65,000 more women than men each year.

• Heart disease can start to develop even in your 20s or 30s.

• From 1989 to 1996, sudden cardiac death climbed 31 percent among women ages 15 to 34.

• 80 percent of heart disease is preventable if you quit smoking, watch your weight, eat right and exercise.
