2008 Ernest A. Codman Award
Novant Health and its staff were named a national winner of the 2008 Ernest A. Codman Award from The Joint Commission. The prestigious Codman Award is presented to organizations that demonstrate exemplary performance to achieve healthcare quality improvement. The health system was honored for its successful efforts to improve hand hygiene compliance and reducing the spread of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections by 53 percent, which means that 249 patients from 2005 through 2008 did not suffer the medical complications of MRSA. VHA Awards
2008
Presbyterian Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital Matthews were the recent recipients of the 2008 VHA Leadership Award, which recognizes high-quality care that meets or exceeds national performance standards. Presbyterian Hospital was honored for Superior System Performance for excellence in heart attack treatment, among other categories, and Presbyterian Hospital Matthews was recognized for the quality of care given to patients in its intensive care units (ICU).

Magnet Nursing Designation
In 2008, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) unanimously named all four of Presbyterian Healthcare’s hospitals as Magnet Health Care facilities. This designation applies to Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville, Presbyterian Hospital Matthews, Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte and Presbyterian Orthopaedic Hospital. Only five percent of all hospitals nationwide have earned this designation, which recognizes facilities that provide the highest level of nursing care. Learn more
Presbyterian Cancer Center Honored as Top in the Nation
The prestigious 2008 Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award was recently given to the Presbyterian Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons. The award, which is based on a rigorous on-site evaluation that examines process and performance within multiple areas of a cancer center, is only given to a few programs across the country that deliver the highest level of cancer care. All three of Presbyterian's Charlotte-area, acute care hospitals renewed their designation as primary stroke centers in 2010. The primary stroke center designation is based on compliance with consensus-based national standards, effective use of established clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care, as well as performance measurements and improvement activities. Society of Chest Pain Centers Reaccredidation
Presbyterian Hospital is the first Chest Pain Center in North Carolina to achieve Cycle II designation, showing that it meets the highest national standards for the care of heart attack and chest pain patients. The goal of the Society of Chest Pain Centers is to significantly reduce patient mortality rates by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reduce the time that it takes to receive treatment and increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment. Presbyterian Hospital's Chest Pain Center received its first accreditation in 2004.
The Joint Commission's Ernest A. Codman Award
In 2004, Presbyterian Healthcare and Novant Health received the Codman Award for excellence in the use of outcomes measurement to achieve improvements in the quality and safety of healthcare. This prestigious national honor was awarded by The Joint Commission for Presbyterian's efforts to reduce patient complications related to the use of a frequently prescribed medicine.

Other National Honors
For 2008, Presbyterian Healthcare and Novant Health have been ranked among the Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Networks, according to Verispan, a research firm that evaluates healthcare systems. The organization is ranked fourth among the Top 100 through the annual survey. The ranking is based on critical success factors determined by Verispan in eight categories: integration; integrated technology; contractual capabilities outpatient utilization; financial stability; services and access; hospital utilization; and physicians.
Mission Lifeline
Presbyterian has taken part in statewide initiatives to improve the care of heart attack victims in North Carolina. Our care of heart attack patients exceeds national standards and serves as a model for others. Mission Lifeline, a project of the American Heart Association (AHA), is tackling heart attack care across the country. The Mission Lifeline six-minute video features interviews with a Presbyterian Hospital Matthews patient and Dr. Dowdy of Presbyterian and Mid Carolina Cardiology, as well as interviews with other patients and healthcare providers.
