Risk Factors
- Personal Risk Factors: age (anything over age 35), problems in past pregnancies, previous birth defects, multiples (twins, triplets or more)
- Medical Risk Factors: This includes any previous medical condition, including high blood pressure, heart, kidney, lung or liver disease, viral or bacterial infection, diabetes, anemia and seizure disorders
- Lifestyle Risk Factors: These are preventable risk factors that you can eliminate by changing your lifestyle. Lifestyle risk factors include smoking, drinking alcohol, poor nutrition, weight (both over- and underweight) and lack of prenatal care
If you experience any of these risk factors, consult with your physician. He or she can help you determine if you need to see a maternal-fetal medicine specialist to ensure that both you and your baby receive remarkable care.
