How do I know if I am a victim of domestic violence?
You may be experiencing domestic violence if your partner physically harms you, tries to control your behavior and isolates you from friends and family, criticizes or humiliates you or forces you to have sex against your will. Domestic violence most often begins with subtle behaviors which increase with intensity and frequency over time.
How do I find help?
Presbyterian has resources to help both patients and families at any point of concern when there may be domestic violence. Project Safe is a comprehensive program to help victims of domestic violence receive needed medical care and connection to community resources. Project Safe offers a free confidential information line for the community. A specially trained counselor will respond to your call and assist with education, community resources, referrals and safety planning.
Often it is helpful to talk with someone outside yoru family and friends to make decisions that will improve your situation. Presbyterian Healthcare also has trained staff on-site at our hospitals who can answer questions and assist any patient who is concerned about physical or emotional violence in their relationship.
What if someone I care about is experiencing violence in their relationship?
Sometimes it may be difficult to know how to help someone you are concerned is in a domestic violence situation. Project Safe counselors can provide education and guidance to help you support those you care about. Learn more
Does domestic violence impact children in the home?
Children depend on their parents and caregivers to provide them a safe environment in which to thrive and grow. Domestic violence creates an unsafe situation in which children are more likely to be victims of abuse themselves either directly or when attempting to intervene to protect their parent. Learn more
Why doesn't the victim just leave the situation?
Sometimes leaving can increase the danger to the victim. Careful planning is essential to the safety of the person. It is important to know what resources are available to help a person maintain safety.
