Presbyterian provides testing for men and women at risk for developing osteoporosis, as well as comprehensive treatment and education for patients with osteoporosis.
Bone Density Testing
As we age, our bones may become brittle and weak. It is important to get enough calcium to keep our bones strong, but it is recommended that people begin screening for osteoporosis at age 65 (or earlier for those at risk). Presbyterian offers diagnostic bone density tests at a variety of locations in the area including our radiology imaging centers and many Presbyterian physician offices. In most situations you may directly schedule a bone density test without a referral from a physician. Learn more
Peripheral Bone Mass Screening
Peripheral testing is done for screening purposes only and is available by appointment for women under 65 and men of all ages. The ultrasound test is done on the heel and the results are available immediately. The results are explained and a brief education of recommended exercise and nutritional needs are included in the $20 fee.
Presbyterian Osteoporosis Center
Located within Presbyterian Hospital, the Presbyterian Osteoporosis Center is the area's leading source for individuals seeking up-to-date information and educational programs on osteoporosis. We offer consultations and classes to help you take charge of your health.
Individual Osteoporosis Consultation
It is important to determine your risk for developing osteoporosis and to take action to prevent it now. Our goal during the 90-100 minute one-on-one consultation with a physical therapist and dietitian is to provide you with a personalized evaluation and treatment plan based on flexibility, strength and balance. This consultation is valuable for someone recently diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Group Education Program
This program offers a series of educational classes for those diagnosed with bone loss. Our goal is to teach you how to prevent fractures and improve posture. A physical therapist and registered dietitian provide information on osteoporosis, fracture prevention, risk factors, current medical treatment, nutrition, safe lifting/ movement, posture and exercise. Each series offers four classes that last approximately two hours each.
