Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation

An estimated three million people in the United States who have had a stroke are living with varying degrees of disability, and at least half of the stroke population require partial or total assistance with daily activities. Stroke rehabilitation helps these individuals achieve the best possible functional outcomes, thereby improving overall quality of life.

Presbyterian Rehabilitation Center Charlotte also offers a specialized Stroke Rehabilitation Program that provides an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation in an outpatient setting. Treatment is designed to meet the individual needs of each patient and can include:

  • Medical management and education
  • Functional restoration
  • Physical reconditioning
  • Coping skills training
  • Individual/family psychological services

Patients may come to the center two to five half-days per week, depending on their condition. The team meets weekly to review the patient’s progress, and the results of the meeting are communicated to the referring physician.

Treatment goals:

  • Improved physical and cognitive functioning and communication skills
  • Enhanced coping for both patients and families
  • Medical management and education to prevent future strokes

The Stroke Program also offers a Stroke Support Group, which meets monthly at the Presbyterian Rehabilitation Center Charlotte. The Stroke Support Group offers different educational topics to patients and family members, as well as emotional and spiritual support.
