Neuropsychology
Clinical neuropsychology involves the diagnosis and treatment of changes in cognition and behavior due to known or suspected brain damage. Neuropsychiatric patients require in-depth cognitive testing in order to ensure proper treatment and ongoing care.
Common neuropsychiatric patients include:
- People suffering from brain injury or stroke-related cognitive impairment
- People of any age suffering from posttraumatic or mild brain injury
- People of any age suffering from seizure and autoimmune disorders
- Elderly adults experiencing memory and cognitive decline
We can perform a number of different assessments, including:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) evaluations for adults and children
- Level of cognitive impairment after brain injury or stroke
- Differentiating progressive dementia diagnoses
Behavioral Medicine
Our behavioral medicine services strive to aid patients with medical conditions that are either maintained or worsened by unmanaged stress. Patients may see improvements in their physical symptoms if they can learn to control stress.
Common medical conditions impacted by stress include:
- Pain
- High blood pressure
- Headaches
- Gastrointestinal complaints, i.e. irritable bowel syndrome
The following treatment options are available to lessen the impact of stress:
- Stress management skills training
- Cognitive coping techniques
- Relaxation training facilitated by biofeedback
Pain Psychology
Our pain psychologists work with patients who are experiencing persistent, chronic pain. Treatment can vary in frequency from weekly to daily sessions based on specific needs. Individual counseling is aimed at teaching patients enhanced strategies for coping with pain and can include relaxation and cognitive therapy.
Psychology also plays a prominent role in the Pain Rehabilitation Program, a four-week daily program during which patients participate in physical therapy, individual counseling and group counseling sessions. Treatment is targeted at helping patients develop effective pain management strategies that improve their functional abilities and decrease their level of pain.
