Pain Rehabilitation

Chronic pain accounts for thousands of doctor visits each year and is one of the leading causes of worker absenteeism and poor quality of life. An individual who has been in pain for a long time is likely to suffer from a number of symptoms in addition to pain, including decreased activity levels, depression, anxiety, frustration, poor sleep, deconditioning and changes in their social and occupational lives. Our Pain Rehabilitation Program treats patients as a whole, targeting the many factors that impact pain, suffering and overall outcome.

Presbyterian’s Pain Rehabilitation Program takes an interdisciplinary approach to chronic pain. The program relies on the expertise of a professional team that provides psychological and physical therapy services. This team works closely with patients’ physicians to provide comprehensive care.

Although the course of treatment varies based on individual needs, most participants receive the following:

  • Pain management techniques
  • Appropriate therapeutic exercise
  • Body mechanics and ergonomic techniques
  • Physical reconditioning
  • Relaxation and breathing exercises
  • Functional restoration (physical therapy)
  • Coping and stress management skills
  • Pain psychology services

Additional services that may be offered:

  • Occupational therapy
  • Biofeedback
  • Aquatic therapy
  • Family/marital services

Goals of the program are individualized, though overall they are to:

  • Improve pain control
  • Increase energy levels
  • Increase endurance, strength and flexibility
  • Relieve drug dependency
  • Reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Improve sleep quality and quantity
  • Return patient to a functional and productive lifestyle
  • Address family and behavioral issues

Patients may attend the program two to four times per week for four hours a day. Patients who are not appropriate for the program may be seen individually by the physical therapist and/or psychologist. After an evaluation, the team will inform the patient and referring physician of the intended treatment plan to ensure appropriate outcomes are achieved.
