Symptoms of Hearing Loss

Approximately 17 percent or 36 million of American adults report some degree of hearing loss.

Patients experiencing any of the following symptoms may have hearing loss and should be evaluated by an audiologist:

• Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
• Difficulty hearing speech from a distance, soft sounds or voices on the phone
• Difficulty hearing in the presence of background noise
• Preferring the radio or television set at a high volume
• Difficulty hearing women’s or children’s voices
• Speaking louder than necessary
• Favoring one ear over the other
• Difficulty locating the source of sound
• Increased fatigue at end of the day
• Finding the need to face people when listening
• Missing more of conversations than usual
• Difficulty hearing in group settings and/or avoidance of group settings
•Trying to guess what was heard
• Finding that loud sounds are annoying
