It is performed in a similar manner as other types of CT scans. The patient lies on a narrow platform that slowly slides through a large circular structure. As the platform slides, a special X-ray camera spins in a circle around the patient, gathering information about that is processed through a computer to generate pictures that represent images of slices at different levels in the neck.

The neck or chest can be performed as separate studies. The neck scan will include the mouth, nasal passages, vocal cords and spinal column areas in the neck. The chest exam will include all structures from the base of the neck down to the top of the kidneys in the abdomen.

Procedure

  • You are escorted into the exam room by the technologist.
  • You lie on the table on your back with your feet toward the scanner.
  • The technologist will start an IV for X-ray dye (contrast).
  • The IV tubing is connected to a machine that will deliver the dye at the right time during the exam.
  • The technologist remains in the room at the start of the dye to monitor the flow.
  • You will be placed inside the CT scanner feet first. This is not an enclosed space. You will be able to see outside of the machine.
  • After you are positioned, the technologist will leave the room to program the scanner.
  • You are able to communicate to the technologist through a speaker system.
  • During the test, the table you are on will move in and out of the scanner in small steps.
  • The technologist will give you breathing instructions for each scan. He or she will ask you to hold your breath for eight to 10 seconds for each scan. There will be breaks in between the scans for you to breath.
  • After the scan, the technologist will remove your IV and help you off of the table.
  • You will be asked to stay in the waiting room while the pictures are reviewed. This is done to ensure we have all of the pictures that we need before you leave.

Special Notes

  • This exam takes about 15 to 20 minutes for each body part. If a neck and chest exam are performed, it will take about 40 minutes.
  • The scan will be shown to a radiologist for interpretation and a report will be sent to your doctor.
  • This report should be available in about four to five working days after the scan.
