Primary Care Sports Medicine

Physicians who have dual certification in family medicine and sports medicine. Their sports medicine training enables them to care for many sports-related orthopaedic injuries when surgery is not required; should you need surgery, they will recommend a plan of action and refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon.

Nerve Conduction Study

A nerve conduction study (NCS) is a test commonly used to evaluate the function, especially the ability of electrical conduction, of the motor and sensory nerves of the human body. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is a common measurement made during this test.

Osteoporosis Care

Treatment of osteoporosis, a disease, occurring especially in women following menopause, in which the bones become extremely porous and are subject to fracture.

Orthopaedic Care

Treatment of disorders or deformities of the spine and joints.

SXA Bone Density Scan

Single-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (SXA scan) measures bone density in the forearm, finger or heel. This is a screening test that your physician will consider along with other risk factors to determine if you need a DEXA Scan.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery (also known as minimally invasive surgery) is performed through multiple small incisions (1/4" to 1/2" long) using specially designed surgical instruments and viewed through a laparoscope, or surgical telescope.

Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF)

A form of spine surgery in which the lumbar spine is approached through an incision in the back. The name of the procedure is derived from: transforaminal (through the foramen), lumbar (lower back), interbody (implants or bone graft placed between two vertebral bodies) and fusion (spinal stabilization). A spinal fusion procedure such as a TLIF may be recommended as a surgical treatment option for patients with a condition causing spinal instability in their lower back.

Pilonidal Cystectomy

A procedure in which the doctor removes a certain type of cyst from the buttock cleft area near the tailbone.

Nucleoplasty

Nucleoplasty is a new, minimally-invasive procedure that offers relief to those with contained lumbar disc herniation or pain.

Splinting

A splint is a medical device for the immobilization of limbs or of the spine.

Laminectomy

Surgical removal of the bony arches on one or more vertebrae in the spine.

Cervical Foraminotomy

An operation to enlarge the space where a spinal nerve root exits the cervical spinal canal to relieve the symptoms of a "pinched nerve."

Discectomy and Microdiscectomy

A procedure that removes the part of the herniated disc that is pinching or putting pressure on the nerve roots, thereby relieving the pain and numbness and allowing recovery of any weakness that may have developed.

Caudal Steroid Injections

This procedure is used to relieve low back and radiating leg pain. The steroids used can reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by stenosis, radiculopathy, sciatica and herniated discs.

Anterior Cervical Corpectomy

A surgical procedure performed in the front of the neck that involves removal of a part of the vertebral body to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.

Orthopaedic Rehab

Physical therapy for injuries or disease of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints and ligaments.

Spine Stabilization

Most neck and lower back pain is caused by spinal instability, a condition that emerges when the ligaments and muscles that support the spine have become so weak that they no longer support the spine properly and allow it to move in abnormal ways. Spine stabilization limits the mobility of the spine to reduce pain.

pDEXA Scan

The Peripheral Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (pDEXA) Scan measures bone density in the forearm, finger or heel. This is a screening test that your physician will consider along with other risk factors to determine if you need a DEXA Scan.

Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection

An injection of long-lasting steroid in the epidural space – that is the area which surrounds the spinal cord and the nerves coming out of it.

Joint Pain Treatment

Treatment of joint pain caused by conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, gout or injury.

Tendon/Nerve Repair

Various treatments or procedures to repair damage to the tendons and/or nerves.

Percutaneous Discectomy

Percutaneous means "through the skin" or using a very small incision. Discectomy is the surgical removal of herniated disc material that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord.

Osteoarthritis Care

Treatment of osteoarthritis, a condition caused by wear and tear that causes inflammation of the joint, causing swelling, pain, and stiffness.

Balloon Kyphoplasty

A minimally invasive procedure to alleviate pain from spinal compression fractures. An orthopedic balloon is placed in the affected vertebra and is inflated; the resulting cavity is filled with bone cement in order to stabilize the vertebral fracture.

Neck and Back Pain Treatment

Patients may suffer from neck and back pain as a result of injury or as a symptom of a problem such as osteoarthritis or disc herniation.

Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement (PCM)

The Artificial Cervical Disc is designed as a replacement for a damaged or diseased spinal disc.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Repair

Repair of the ligament, located in the center of the knee, that controls rotation and forward movement of the tibia (shin bone).

Ultrasound Densitometry

This measures bone in the heel, shinbone or kneecap. It is also used as a screening tool and while not as precise as absorptiometry techniques, it is still effective, inexpensive, portable and uses no radiation. This technique is primarily used as a screening tool to predict fracture risk.

Synvisc Injection

SYNVISC injections can relieve pain from osteoarthritis of the knee and help you move more freely for up to six months.

Valet Parking

Valet parking service is available. There is no charge to the patient for this service.

Ultrasound

An ultrasound, also called sonography, is a diagnostic imaging technique which uses high-frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, tissues and organs. Ultrasounds are used to view internal organs as they function, and to assess blood flow through various vessels.

Sports Medicine Procedures

The field of medicine concerned with physical fitness and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries sustained in sports or exercise.

Spine Surgery

Spinal problems can often be corrected with therapeutic techniques. However, if surgery is necessary,  treatments may include:

  • Innovative fixation (or spinal stabilization) techniques called Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty. These procedures use cement to help stabilize spines that have weakened due to fractures or deformities.
  •
    Minimally-invasive surgery for herniated discs.
  • Reconstructive spinal surgery for patients with spinal deformities or complex injuries.

Rotator Cuff Repair

The rotator cuff is a group of four tendons and the related muscles that stabilize the shoulder and allow you to raise and rotate your arm. Surgery may be used to treat a rotator cuff disorder if the injury is very severe or if nonsurgical treatment has failed to improve shoulder strength and movement sufficiently.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy involves the evaluation and treatment of problems associated with mobility, balance, coordination and musculoskeletal pain.

Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric surgery is the treatment of disease, injury or other disorders in children by direct physical intervention, usually with instruments. Surgery involves the cutting into the skin or other organ to accomplish restoring the body to a healthful state.

Pain Management and Treatment

Pain management and treatment options address the whole person, not just the site of the pain. Options may include: occupational therapy, physical therapy, pain psychology, biofeedback, integrated mind-body pain program, medication management, social work, patient-controlled analgesia, epidural injections, procedural treatments, and/or implantable technologies.

Nerve Block

A nerve block is a form of anesthesia in which medication is injected near a nerve so that pain signals from the nerve cannot pass through.

Myelogram

A myelogram is a specific x-ray study that allows careful evaluation of the spinal canal and nerve roots. It involves the injection of a dye or contrast material into the spinal canal.

Multi-Slice CT

Multislice CT scans, or MSCT scans, often allow remarkably accurate imaging of the coronary arteries, and often, blockages in the coronary arteries can be seen quite clearly. The quality of the image with MSCT scans is partially related to the number of "slices" taken by the camera. Currently, 16-slice and 64-slice CT imagers are commercially available.

MRI with Sedation

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic imaging technology that uses a strong magnet and radio waves to produce pictures or images of your internal body organs and structures. Patients who do not like small, tight places or who are in a great deal of pain may requre sedation for their MRI exam.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of large magnets, radiofrequencies and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body.

Joint Replacement

Surgeons perform joint replacement surgeries for knees, hips and shoulders. Following joint replacement surgery, most patients are able to resume previous daily activities with vastly improved comfort levels and ease of movement.

Surface replacement surgery is sometimes recommended for younger, more physically active patients. Other alternatives to total joint replacement include Osteotomy, Arthroplasty and Arthrodesis.

Fractured Bone Repair

Fixing broken bones is often done with plates, nails, screws and pins. Many patients must wear external fixation frames or casts to get their bones back into proper alignment.

Foot and Ankle Surgery

Surgical procedures to treat problems with the foot and ankle.

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique commonly used by physicians to obtain real-time images of the internal structures of a patient through the use of a fluoroscope.

Electromyography (EMG Testing)

Electromyography (EMG) measures the response of muscles and nerves to electrical activity. It is used to help determine muscle conditions that might be causing muscle weakness, including muscular dystrophy and nerve disorders.

Discogram

A discogram is a special x-ray that will help your physician determine which "discs" are causing your back pain.

CT Scan

A computed tomography scan (also called a CT or CAT scan) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices), both horizontally and vertically, of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general x-rays.

Knee Ligament Repair

Knee ligament repair is a treatment for a complete tear of a knee ligament that results in instability in the knee. The surgery involves reattaching the torn ends of the ligament or replacing the ligament with a piece of healthy tendon. A tendon from the kneecap or hamstring, for example, is grafted into place to hold the knee joint together. The tendon graft may come from the person (autograft) or from a cadaver (allograft).

Hand Surgery

Surgery to address conditions and injuries of the hand.

Rheumatology Services

Diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the joints, muscles, bones and tendons (such as arthritis and degenerative joint disease).

Osteoporosis Testing

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become more fragile and more likely to break. A bone density test, also called densitometry or DEXA scan, can determine if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of osteoporosis before you break any bones.

Osteopathic Medicine

Osteopathic physicians use all conventional methods of diagnosis and treatment but are trained to place additional emphasis on the achievement of normal body mechanics as central to maintaining good health.

Joint Injections (Intra-Articular Injection)

A joint injection is a procedure used in the treatment of inflammatory joint conditions.

Joint Aspirations (Arthrocentesis)

A procedure where fluid is drained from a joint and analysis can determine the cause of certain joint pain.

Bone Fracture/Sprain Management

Care for broken bones as well as sprains (a partial or complete tear of a ligament).

Bone Density Testing (DEXA Scan)

A bone density test, or DEXA Scan,  is a noninvasive, evaluation procedure that uses x-rays to measure bone mass or the weight of the skeleton. The amount of bone in the skeleton determines how strong it is. Bone densitometry is often used to measure bone mass in the spine, hips and arms, as these are the areas most likely to fracture when bone mass is low.

Arthritis Management

The focus of arthritis management is to control pain, minimize joint damage and improve or maintain function and quality of life. According to the American College of Rheumatology, the treatment of arthritis might involve the following: medication, nonpharmacologic therapies and/or surgery.

Osteoporosis Treatment Plans

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and loss of bone tissue. Treatment of osteoporosis depends on the cause of your condition, the severity of bone loss, and the response to treatments. In general, treatments include calcium, vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, prevention of falls, and bone-friendly medicines.

X-ray

An x-ray is a diagnostic test which uses invisible electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones and organs onto film.
