How does it work?
A high-resolution ultrasound is combined with computer technology allowing doctors to measure the thickness of the carotid arteries in the neck. This test is effective in identifying thickening of the artery walls that can increase risk of heart attack and stroke.
When will I know the results?
Results of the test are sent to your referring physician.
If, after receiving the results, you would like more information on reducing your risk factors for heart disease, you may talk with your physician or call Presbyterian Novant Heart & Wellness at 704-384-5043.

Carotid IMT Ultrasound Preparation Instructions
On the day of the examination wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Do not consume any alcohol or use any tobacco products prior to the exam. Continue to take any medications that you usually take as prescribed by your physician. You may need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the exam room. No other preparation is required.
Carotid IMT Ultrasound Procedure
When you arrive for your Carotid IMT exam, a technologist will escort you into the ultrasound scan room will you will lay face-up on a table that can be tilted or moved. A clear water-based gel is applied to the area of the body being studied to help the transducer make secure contact with the body. The radiologist then presses the transducer firmly against the skin in various locations, sweeping over the area of interest or angling the sound beam from a farther location to better see an area of concern. When the examination is complete, the patient may be asked to dress and wait while the ultrasound images are reviewed.
What are the benefits and risks of the Carotid IMT?
Benefits
• Carotid ultrasound scanning is noninvasive and painless.
• Ultrasound imaging does not use any ionizing radiation.
• Ultrasound scanning gives a clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on x-ray images.
• If a carotid ultrasound exam shows narrowing of one or both carotid arteries, treatment can be
taken to restore the free flow of blood to the brain. Many strokes are prevented as a result.
Risks
• In nearly 50 years of experience, Carotid IMT Ultrasound has proved to be a risk-free procedure.
