While heart disease isn't entirely preventable, there are some things you can do to control your risk.  Studies have shown that there is a direct link between sleep health conditions and heart disease, and it's important to ensure that you are getting quality sleep each night.  More than 10 percent of the population has undiagnosed sleep apnea, which is an underlying cause of heart disease.  In addition, lack of quality sleep can also contribute to heart problems in the future.  In addition to heart disease, not sleeping well can lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, stroke, depression and other serious health issues.

Most often, your bed partner will be the first to notice sleep apnea symptoms, which can include loud snoring, gasping for breath in the night, shortness of breath and insomnia.  Even if you don't recall waking up in the night, you may feel tired the next day or experience concentration/memory problems, headaches and irritability.
