Following a low-sodium diet is based on four principles:
- Know your sodium allowance. For heart failure patients, this is 2,000 mg of sodium per day, or 600 mg sodium per meal and 200 mg sodium for all snacks.
- Understand how to read food labels, and read them!
- Choose the right foods when you shop.
- Always remember that a low-sodium diet should be based on fresh and minimally processed foods.
