Lung Cancer Services

More than 170,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer each year. Of these, approximately 50 percent have never smoked or are former smokers.

Researchers have discovered several causes of lung cancer, most of which are related to the use of tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and even exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke. Other known causes of lung cancer include radon gas and asbestos. Certain lung diseases, such as tuberculosis (TB), also increase a person's chance of developing lung cancer.

 

Are You at Risk for Lung Cancer?

Knowing the risk factors of cancer and living a healthy lifestyle play an important role in the prevention cancer.

Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, with more than 50 percent of new cases thought to be a result of smoking. Additionally, those who exhibit any of the following characteristics are also at risk:

  • Second-hand smoke
  • Smoking marijuana
  • Recurring inflammation
  • Asbestos exposure
  • Talcum powder
  • Cancer-causing agents
  • Radon
  • Personal history of lung cancer
  • Air pollution
