The Presbyterian Lung Nodule Evaluation Program seeks to increase the early detection of lung cancer by examining pulmonary nodules on CT scans with the ultimate goal being improved treatment options and survival rates. A collaboration between radiology, pulmonary, thoracic and oncology experts, the Lung Nodule Evaluation Program provides ongoing care for patients with benign or malignant lung nodules.
How does it work?
A physician may recommend a CT scan to help diagnose or monitor a health condition, and often other areas of concern are discovered incidentally. While these pulmonary nodules are typically benign and pose no harm to your health, it is important to monitor on a regular basis to be sure that lung cancer isn't developing.
A nurse navigator will review all suspicious chest CT findings and collaborate with physicians (including your primary care physician) on a plan of care recommendation. Either the Lung Nodule Evaluation Program nurse practitioner or your primary care physician will contact you with this information and recommendations.
From there, you may be asked to schedule an appointment with a pulmonologist to discuss your family history, risk factors and next steps.
If lung cancer is discovered, you will immediately be connected with a lung cancer patient navigator and the Second Opinion Cancer Clinic, where cancer specialists meet together to consider your case on a individual basis and make the most comprehensive recommendation for treatment.
Who is a candidate for the Lung Nodule Evaluation Program?
You may contact the Lung Nodule Evaluation Program nurse practitioner at 704-384-9956, and she can help you determine if you are an appropriate candidate. Your physician and the radiologist reading your CT scan may also be able to help you determine if you are a candidate for this program and provide you with appropriate next steps.
If you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate lung cancer, contact your primary care physician immediately. If you are looking for a primary care physician, search our online physician finder to find a doctor that's right for you.
