What is a Mammogram?

Mammography screening is the best method for finding breast cancer in its early stages, when cure rates are highest. If a problem is detected, women may also need a diagnostic mammogram or other breast imaging test.

Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammogram

Screening mammograms are for women who do not have significant symptoms, such as a lump or black or bloody nipple discharge. Women with these symptoms should have a diagnostic mammogram, which must be scheduled by a physician.

Presbyterian offers digital mammography, the latest advancement in the early detection of breast cancer. New digital capabilities will enable the technologist to immediately view images on the screen, thereby reducing the amount of time spent in the imaging suite and the need for retakes.

Mammography is just one of three methods of early detection. Learn more.

Digital mammography may be more accurate in screening women:

  • Under the age of 50.
  • Of any age with very dense or extremely dense breast tissue.
  • Of any age who are pre- or perimenopausal.

Report

You should receive the results within approximately seven days, although it could take longer if previous films have to be obtained from another facility.
