CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Presbyterian Cancer Center received a $50,000 grant from the Jimmy V Foundation, an organization that supports cancer research and was founded by Jim Valvano, the former men's basketball coach of North Carolina State University. The grant will support a breast cancer study on current trends and diversity disparities in cancer treatment options.
"I am extremely excited that the Jimmy V Foundation has chosen to partner with Presbyterian," says Richard Reiling M.D., FACS, and medical director of Presbyterian Cancer Center. "They are a great organization that does so much for cancer research, and Presbyterian is excited to be a part of that. We appreciate them funding our study on breast cancer treatments, as we feel that we can make great strides with this research."
This study will examine changes in breast cancer treatment patterns and trends, particularly focusing on minority populations and elderly patients. It will investigate the factors responsible for the recent changes in breast cancer care patterns, with the ultimate goal to improve patient care. Dr. Reiling, who will lead the study, will analyze patient data throughout the entire Novant Health system, spreading from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia and gaining broader reach than just the Charlotte area.
"We look forward to expanding our knowledge about breast cancer and learning about the best treatment methods," Dr. Reiling said. "This grant from Jimmy V opens doors to new research, and we hope to gain valuable insight as a result."
