Community invited to participate to raise awareness and funds for obesity research and education
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Presbyterian Bariatric Center and Southeast Bariatrics are sponsoring Charlotte's 2011 Walk from Obesity this Saturday, Nov. 2, at Presbyterian Hospital. The walk begins at 9 a.m., with registration opening at 8:30 a.m.
Walkers participating in the event can choose from a 3.1 mile or 1.2 mile route beginning and ending in the front of Presbyterian Hospital's uptown campus at 200 Hawthorne Lane. After the race, there will be prizes, a silent auction and music as part of the finish line celebration. This year's event will also include a health fair on the hospital lawn.
“The walk is a celebration,” said Regina Hartung, senior director for Presbyterian Bariatric Center. “It is so inspiring to see individuals come together to share their accomplishments and support each other along the way.”
Proceeds from the Walk from Obesity benefit the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the Obesity Action Coalition to fund research, advocacy and education for all those affected by obesity. The Walk from Obesity is a national event, and this is the fourth year the Walk is taking place in the Charlotte community.
“People are not always comfortable talking about obesity,” said Hartung. “Fortunately, events like the ‘Walk from Obesity’ help in the effort to educate people about the disease and its proper treatments.”
Individuals interested in participating in the Walk from Obesity should visit www.presbyterian.org/walkfromobesity to register for the walk. You may also register at the event.
