CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Presbyterian Healthcare Board of Trustees recently elected new leaders and officers.
Vi Lyles, project coordinator for the Lee Institute in Charlotte, was named chair of the board as well as a member of the new executive committee. Lyles is the first woman and minority to hold this position. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Queens College, as well as a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Lyles also attended Harvard University's Senior Executive Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. She previously worked as the assistant city manager for the City of Charlotte. Lyles was recognized for her service in the community as the 2003 Charlotte Woman of the Year.
Additional members of the executive committee include:
- James Palermo, vice-chairman. Palermo is the executive in residence at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte. He is the former executive vice president of Bank of America, where he retired in 2003 after 24 years with the company. Palermo served as chair of the Charlotte Center City Partners and also sat on the board of directors for the Retinitis Pigmitosos Foundation, Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Foundation and the Arts and Science Board. He is also co-founder of the Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas. Palermo earned a bachelor’s degree from Canisius College, Buffalo, N.Y.
- Arthur Gallagher, secretary. Gallagher was named president of Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte in 2003 after serving as the vice president of Student Affairs at the Providence, R.I. campus. Before joining Johnson & Wales, Gallagher held the titles of associate dean of Student Life and director of Residential Life at Brown University, where he was employed for 24 years. He also sits on the boards of directors for the United Way of Central Carolinas, Arts & Science Council, Charlotte Center City Partners and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. Gallagher received his bachelor’s in english and later a master’s in education from Fairfield University in Connecticut.
- Jesse Cureton, treasurer. Cureton is the North Carolina regional executive for U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management. Prior to assuming this role, he served as the regional president for Bank of America’s Private Bank and has been with the company for the past 21 years. Cureton is a two-time recipient of the LEND award and has received the Citizen of the Year Award from the UCAC Chamber Board and the Mentor of the Year from 100 Black Men of America. He also serves on the board of directors for Junior Achievement of the Central Carolinas. Cureton received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his master’s from the McColl Graduate School of Business, Executive MBA program.
Additionally, William Poston, M.D., Presbyterian Hospital, joined as a new board of trustee member. A graduate of the University of Richmond, he attended medical school at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. He completed his residency in pathology at the Brooke Army Medical Center. Poston is board certified in hematology as well as anatomic and clinical pathology. He previously served as president of the Mecklenburg Medical Society. In his role at Presbyterian, he serves as a staff pathologist and medical director of Hematology at Presbyterian Hospital as well as the medical director of the laboratory at Presbyterian Hospital Matthews.

- Benjamin Jenkins, senior executive vice president of the general bank of Wachovia
- Bruce Jones, president and chief executive officer of Community Bank of Rowan
- D. Harding Stowe, president and chief executive officer of R.L. Stowe Mills
- Paul A. Stroup, retired president and chief executive officer of Lance, Inc.
- Carl Amato, president of Core Markets for Novant Health
- Paul Wiles, president and chief executive officer of Novant Health
