CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Thomas A. Barringer, M.D., co-medical director of Presbyterian Novant Heart & Wellness, has been awarded Fellow status with the National Lipid Association (NLA). The NLA is a nonprofit, multidisciplinary medical society with over 3,500 members dedicated to reducing illness and deaths stemming from cholesterol and triglyceride disorders and preventing heart and vascular disease.
Dr. Barringer joins more than 160 physicians and allied healthcare professionals from across the nation who have achieved Fellow status with the NLA. The NLA awards Fellow status only to those physicians and allied healthcare professionals who have distinguished themselves amongst their colleagues and who have satisfied the stringent requirements established by the NLA for such recognition.
To obtain fellow status, an NLA member must be in good standing with the organization, hold a professional degree, be nominated by at least two persons familiar with his or her practice and be recognized by peers for contributions to the field of clinical lipidology. In addition, he or she must have demonstrated a significant commitment to the NLA at the national or regional level. Upon approval by the NLA board of directors, accepted Fellows of the NLA may append their names with the title, “FNLA.”
Dr. Barringer has over 10 years of research and clinical experience in preventive cardiology and is a Fellow of the American Heart Association. A board-certified clinical lipidologist, he is also designated by the American Society of Hypertension as a specialist in clinical hypertension and is a board-certified family physician. His interests include atherosclerosis imaging using carotid IMT, complex lipoprotein disorders, nutrition and omega-3 fatty acid biology. Dr. Barringer earned a medical degree from the University of North Carolina, where he is currently adjunct associate professor.
