CHARLOTTE, NC – The Presbyterian Diabetes Resource Center diabetes self-management education program has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The program, which was originally honored in 2000, was recently recognized again for the high-quality education services provided to patients. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management for participants.
Presbyterian Diabetes Resource Center Charlotte, Presbyterian Diabetes Resource Center Matthews and Presbyterian Diabetes Resource Center PrimeCare locations have all received this recognition for their self-management program, which is essential for patients living with diabetes to maintain a high quality of life.
Diabetes is a disease that affects approximately 21 million people in the United States. The staff at Presbyterian Diabetes Resource Center believes knowledge is the most powerful prescription for reducing the complications of this disease. Presbyterian Diabetes Resource Center offers patient education on a variety of health issues related to diabetes including:
- Home blood glucose monitoring
- Meal planning principles
- Insulin administration
- Management of diabetes during illness
- Prevention of complications
- Management of diabetes during pregnancy
- Insulin pump therapy
- And other special interest topics.
Assuring high-quality education for patient self-care is one of the primary goals of the ADA Education Recognition program. Through the support of the health care team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of that responsibility for his/her diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.
Presbyterian physician partners have also been recognized for their commitment to providing quality care to patients with diabetes. More than ninety Presbyterian primary care physicians have been recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for their care of diabetic patients as a part of the organization’s commitment to providing top-quality care to children and adults living with diabetes.
