Charlotte, N.C. -- Being a pediatric hematologist-oncologist is hard work, yet Mark Mogul, M.D., makes it look easy. He spends his days at Presbyterian Blume Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Clinic making children laugh, playing dress up, but most importantly using his expertise to beat any parent's worst nightmare -- childhood cancer.
Last week Dr. Mogul was recognized as News Talk 1110, WBT's 2007 Hometown Hero of the Year for his extraordinary efforts at the clinic. He was one of 26 in the running after a year's worth of worthy recipients gathered at the annual awards ceremony at Ballantyne Resort. Each nominated individual demonstrated dedication and commitment to making the Charlotte community a better place to live.
Dr. Mogul's nomination as Hometown Hero of the Year was helped by an unsolicited letter from a parent who lost her child to cancer. Touched by his unwavering compassion, she wrote, "I am sure his patients now are some of the luckiest children in the pediatric cancer world to have him on their side. He truly is an angel on earth."
According to Mogul, however, it is he who is lucky. "I am so blessed to do what I love and to work with a remarkable team. Everything we do, we do it for the kids."
As part of the Hometown Hero of the Year award, Dr. Mogul was given $5,000 to distribute to the charities of his choice. The following groups will benefit from his compassion:
-
March Forth with Hope
-
The DreamStreet Foundation
- Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
- Zach Ramsey Foundation
- Josh Milburn Foundation
- Matt Clark Foundation
