Huntersville, N.C. -- Surgeons at Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville are taking laparoscopic surgeries to the next level -- they are now performing surgeries that only require one incision through the belly button. Known as Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery, or SILS, the most common procedures using SILS are gallbladder removals, appendectomies and colon resections. Patients experience less pain and faster recovery time than they would in traditional laparoscopic procedures.
Two Novant Medical Group surgeons, Peyton Davis, MD, and Ryan Heider, MD, perform this procedure whenever possible because of the benefits that it provides to their patients. “My patients typically leave the hospital within hours of having their procedure done,” Davis said. “In addition, they have virtually no scar, which is the biggest benefit of this type of procedure.”
In addition to the cosmetic benefits, patients also experience less pain, since less tissue has been cut. Mike Dobson, M.D., a colorectal surgeon with Surgical Specialists of Charlotte, also performs SILS procedures at Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville and performs colon resections using this method.
“With SILS, my patients have a shorter hospital stay, compared to patients who have open or other laparoscopic colon resections,” Dobson said. “My patients can eat the day after their surgery and typically leave the hospital within two to three days. For open colon resections, most patients are in the hospital for 5-7 days.”
Both doctors agree – patients are pleased and amazed with the results, and they believe that SILS is going to become common practice among the medical community.
“I want to do everything I can to help my patients recover quickly and easily,” Davis said. “SILS helps me achieve that mission.”
