CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Local cardiologist Yele Aluko, M.D., FACC, of the Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute and Mid Carolina Cardiology, was presented with the Richard Vinroot International Achievement Award on Monday, May 10, 2010. Dr. Aluko was honored for his contributions to the international character of our community and the assistance he has provided to others abroad. He was selected by Mayor Anthony Foxx and was honored at the annual Mayor's International Community Awards (MICA) luncheon. This annual event recognizes individuals, organizations and foreign-owned firms for outstanding contributions to philanthropy in the Charlotte region.
In addition to providing leading-edge care to Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute patients, Dr. Aluko has been a passionate contributor to the local community since 1989. He is a past board member of the Association of Black Cardiologists, a past president and founding member of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas and a founding member of the Carolinas Association for Community Health Equity. Dr. Aluko has also served on the board of the World Affairs Council of Charlotte and the Greater Carolinas chapter of the American Red Cross.
A practicing cardiologist and past president at Mid Carolina Cardiology, Dr. Aluko was born in Nigeria, West Africa. Following medical school in Nigeria, he completed a residency and fellowship at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a fellowship in cardiology at Cornell University Medical College.
The MICA awards were established 13 years ago as a way to encourage local foreign-owned firms to adopt corporate philanthropy as a business practice, something not as common with corporations located outside the United States. The awards are coordinated by the Charlotte International Cabinet in conjunction with the Office of the Mayor.
