CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Presbyterian Sports Medicine has partnered with USA Canoe/Kayak to provide advanced sports medicine care to its national team athletes.

“We’re proud to be the official healthcare providers for USA Canoe/Kayak,” said Michael S. Hoben, MD, physician leader for Presbyterian Sports Medicine.  “Our experts are dedicated to injury prevention and performance enhancement and are honored to work with these amazing athletes.”

This week, the team is in Charlotte for the USA Canoe/Kayak Slalom Team Trials, scheduled for April 15-17 at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.  Top athletes will battle for spots on the national team in preparation for the 2011 World Cups and World Championships as well as the 2012 Pan American Championships.  Presbyterian Sports Medicine experts will provide onsite and after-hours care to about 80 USA Canoe/Kayak elite and junior team athletes competing in the team trials.  Services such as massage and abrasion care as well as 24-hour support for any health-related concerns will be available to participating athletes.

“The support and care provided to our national team athletes by the experts at Presbyterian Sports Medicine has been overwhelming,” said William Irving, USA Canoe/Kayak national teams director.  “They help us ensure that we are sending our athletes into competition in top physical shape and that injuries are addressed early, before they become a larger issue.”

Several national team athletes in Charlotte for the trials will visit patients at Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital on Wed., Apr. 13.  “We’re grateful for the opportunity to give back by visiting patients at Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital,” said Irving.  “Our athletes visited children there over the Thanksgiving holiday and were incredibly inspired by their strength and great outlook on life despite their illnesses.  We can’t wait to spend more time with them on the eve of the team trials.”
