CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Presbyterian Healthcare has named Jason Bernd vice president of cardiovascular services. As leader of the Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute, Bernd is now responsible for directing a $150 million service line encompassing four hospitals and numerous specialties, including cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, electrophysiology, noninvasive cardiology, peripheral vascular and cardiac catheterization and medical cardiology. The Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute delivers lifesaving services to more than 32,000 patients annually.

In his new role, Bernd will spearhead the coordination and integration of strategic planning, development of new technologies, growth initiatives and capital planning across the Greater Charlotte area. His top initiatives include increasing services aimed at preventing cardiovascular disease - the number one killer of women and men. He is also focused on the continued development of physician partnerships and the expansion of cardiovascular services at the system's community hospitals in Huntersville, Salisbury and Matthews.

"We have a unique culture in that administrators and staff work with our physician partners to ensure that patients receive excellent care," says Bernd. "In addition, our program features leading-edge technologies and the latest treatments, and our physicians participate in many pivotal research trials. As a result, the Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute is ranked in the top 10 percent in the nation for cardiac care."

Previously, Bernd was director of financial planning for Novant Health, the parent company of Presbyterian Healthcare - a position he held for three years. During this time, he played a key strategic business role in the organization's $200 million merger with the Virginia-based Prince William Health System. The Prince William merger was one of more than 75 business ventures with which Bernd was directly involved. He was also an instrumental team member in Novant Health's 2008 merger with Rowan Regional Medical Center, the negotiation of a multimillion dollar line of credit with a large financial institution and the acquisition of a surgery center.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, Bernd earned a master of business administration degree and certificate in public management from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. The Charlotte Business Journal recently selected Bernd to its 40 under 40 list as one of the Charlotte region's most promising young business leaders. He is an active community volunteer, serving on several nonprofit boards and preparing tax returns free of charge for low-income Charlotte residents. Bernd resides in Charlotte with his wife, Tiffany.
