Frequently Asked Questions About Hemby

Many families have questions when their child is admitted into the hospital. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers to make the trip to Hemby a little easier.

What should I bring when my child comes to Hemby Children's Hospital?

If your child has favorite juices or toys, feel free to bring those. Otherwise, we will provide everything you need. We have a great play area full of toys and books, and we will provide meals for your child as well as a guest tray for a parent. We have a kitchen area stocked with juices and snacks, and even a laundry room for you to use.

If your child is having surgery, we recommend you bring the following: comfortable clothes that are easy to remove or replace, special stuffed animal, blanket or pillow, favorite toy and/or movie and warm socks.

Where do I park?

Patient and visitor parking is located at the corner of Hawthorne Lane and 5th Street. 

How does the admitting process work?  

During the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., your child will come directly to Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital located on the 2nd floor of Presbyterian Hospital (200 Hawthorne Lane in Charlotte).  Park in the visitor's deck and follow the signs to the dedicated Hemby elevator.  If your child needs to be admitted in the evening, early morning, or weekends, you will enter through the Emergency Department and then be directed to our children's hospital.   

Will I be able to stay with my child?

Absolutely! Rooming-in with your child is highly encouraged and your are welcome to stay with your child 24 hours a day.  Our family-friendly rooms feature a parent bed, private bathroom, televisioin and kitchen area with microwave and mini-fridge.  Also for your convenience, we have an area stocked with juices and snacks for parents and even a laundry room that you are welcome to use.   

Will the staff be qualified to take care of my child?

All of our nurses, CNAs and secretaries work only with children and take continuing medical education courses to make sure the hospital is current on all the advancements in treatments plans. In addition, our physicians are specially trained to work with children, and our Child Life staff even train our volunteers so that we can be sure they are helping us provide excellent care.

What about visitors?

Company is good medicine! Children's spirits often lift after visits from family and friends.  To make visits safe and enjoyable for your child, do not allow visitors with a cold or flu symptoms or recent exposure to infectious diseases, such as chicken pox, enter your child's room.   

Do you have set visiting hours?

No, we welcome and encourage family members and friends to come and spend time with our patients.

How do I schedule a tour?

A Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital tour is an entertaining and educational way to help children and their parents learn what to expect in the hospital. A Child Life Specialist will conduct a tour of the children's hospital Monday thru Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Any child who is scheduled to have surgery is encouraged to take a tour prior to being admitted to the hospital.  Please call 704-384-3952 to arrange a tour. 

How do I make a donation of books, toys or other items for children?

We are always grateful to receive items for our pediatric patients!  Please call the Child Life office at 704-384-5134 for suggested items to donate and to make arrangements to deliver your donated items.  Unfortunately, we are unable to accept homemade food of any kind.
