CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown has traveled the world as a physician and a missionary, touching the lives of thousands from North Carolina to South Africa. Now, the family practitioner and medical director of Presbyterian Urgent Care is being honored for the work she's doing right here in her own community.
On November 7, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation named Dr. Garmon-Brown a Local Hero and presented her with one of five Neighborhood Excellence Initiative (NEI) awards reserved for community leaders who have contributed significantly to the health of their neighborhoods.
In addition to her everyday roles as physician and leader at Presbyterian Healthcare, Dr. Garmon-Brown holds leadership roles at several community health clinics and volunteers at others. She founded and is medical director of the Charlotte Community Health Clinic, which provides limited healthcare services to low-income adults. She also volunteers at the Charlotte Pregnancy Care Center and Shelter Health Services, where she provides free healthcare to homeless women and children living in the Salvation Army Center of Hope.
Dr. Garmon-Brown's contributions still haven't been enough to satisfy her endless passion for helping others, however. She wants to also give back on a spiritual level, and in between all of her other obligations, she is training to become a church pastor. In recognition of her dedication to the community, Dr. Garmon-Brown will make a $5,000 donation to Shelter Health Services.
NEI award recipients were chosen by a local market selection committee. The Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Initiative began in 2004 to "recognize, nurture and reward organizations and individuals helping to rebuild and revitalize their communities."
