Physician First North Carolina Doctor Elected To National Post

Charlotte, N.C. -- Jared N. Schwartz, M.D., Ph.D., F.C.A.P., was recently elected to serve as the 30th President of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Dr. Schwartz, who was officially installed to serve during the group's national meeting in Chicago, is the first physician from North Carolina to be elected to serve as president.
Dr. Schwartz is currently the director of Presbyterian Healthcare's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. At Presbyterian Healthcare, he currently chairs the Pathology Peer Review and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Medical Board, the Cancer Center Strategic Planning Committee, the Breast Cancer Advisory Committee and the CEO Physician Leadership Group. Prior to his current hospital posts, he previously served as a staff pathologist and medical staff chief.
A winner of the CAP Outstanding Communicator Award the CAP Foundation Herbert Lansky Award, Dr. Schwartz is a long-time member of the CAP Spokespersons Network and is currently an alternate delegate for the World Association of Societies of Pathologists and Laboratory Medicine.
Dr. Schwartz is presently a member of many professional societies including the American Medical Associates, the American Associates of Physician Executives, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the American Society of Cytology, the American Society of Microbiology, the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, North Carolina Medical Society, the North Carolina Society of Pathologists and Sigma Xi - Duke University Chapter.
Prior to his election as CAP's President-Elect in 2005, Dr. Schwartz served a four year term as secretary-treasurer. During his tenure, Dr. Schwartz also served as chairman to both the Finance Committee and the Ad-Hoc Task Force on National Preparedness. Previously, Dr. Schwartz was president of the CAP Foundation Board and a member of the CAP/JCAHO Lab Committee and Microbiology Resource Committee. Additionally, Dr. Schwartz served as past chair of the Council on Scientific Affairs, the CAP Web Strategy Task Force and the Program and Program Evaluation Committee.
Dr. Schwartz earned his bachelors of science degree in Microbiology and his MSc in Mycology from Ohio State University in Columbus. He received his medical degree from Duke University Medical School in Durham and his Ph.D. in Pathology from Duke University Graduate School. Dr. Schwartz completed his internship, fellowship and residency at Duke University Medical Center - Department of Pathology, where he also served as Chief Resident from 1976-1977. Dr. Schwartz also served as a medical examiner in Durham County, N.C.
Dr. Schwartz is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Cytopathology and Medical Microbiology and the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
