New Technology Makes Detecting Breast Cancer more Accurate and Efficient
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Presbyterian Hospital has completed a systemwide rollout of digital mammography. This state-of-the-art technology will provide the latest advancements in the early detection of breast cancer.
From the patient's perspective, digital mammography is much like the traditional film screen mammography. Both use X-ray to generate images of the breast; however the new technology can now convert X-ray energy into a digital image. The resulting images are then immediately produced on the technologist's screen, thereby reducing the amount of time spent in the imaging suite and the need for retakes.
From the physician's perspective, digital mammography has paved the way for innovation in early detection. Research has shown that digital mammography may be more accurate in screening three types of women:
- Under age 50
- Of any age with very dense or extremely dense breast tissue
- Pre- or perimenopausal women of any age
With six locations across the region, Presbyterian Breast Center ensures women receive remarkable care close to home. Each imaging center is staffed with technologists and radiologists with special training in mammography to provide that extra level of comfort and care. "At Presbyterian Breast Center, we are committed to providing timely and accurate results to women who receive a mammogram," said Dr. Nicole Abinanti, radiologist. "Digital mammography has helped us continue to deliver a remarkable patient experience to everyone who walks through the door."
