Matthews, N.C. -- Presbyterian Hospital Matthews is pleased to announce the expansion of the Hemby Special Care Nursery. The Level III nursery opened in 2005 with four beds but has now doubled to an eight-bed unit equipped with respirators, incubators, radiant warmers and other state-of-the-art equipment. This expansion allows PHM to care for even more seriously ill newborns in the Matthews, Union County and South Charlotte communities.
"Before, clinicians may have encouraged this type of patient to seek care in a different location that could respond to their unique needs. Now, doctors can begin to take on, see and treat high-risk pregnancies and care for babies born with special needs," said Amy Vance, Senior Director of Operations for Presbyterian Hospital Matthews.
At PHM, board-certified neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners are available for high-risk deliveries 24 hours a day.
In addition to the expansion, four new labor-delivery-recovery-post-partum rooms have also opened to new mothers. These new rooms are decorated in soft colors with home-like touches such as recliners, dinette sets, TV, VCR, refrigerator, large windows and outside balconies.
"We are now able to bring a higher level of care to our tiniest patients," said Vance.
