CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Presbyterian Hospital unveiled today its plan for combating health care disparities among underserved children across the region. The plan, which will roll out in time for the 2007 holiday season, consists of a 38-foot recreational vehicle and a dedicated team of a physician director, staff and volunteers who will visit chronically underserved communities and provide primary and preventive pediatric medical care.
According to Lynn Boggs, chief operating officer of Presbyterian Hospital, "In a state where one in nine children lack health insurance, the Presbyterian Community Care Cruiser will provide more than medical services; it will provide a continuum of care that creates a platform for changing young lives. Presbyterian Hospital is honored to fulfill its mission of improving the health of the communities, one person at a time through this unique endeavor."
The Community Care Cruiser will work closely with schools, churches and Presbyterian's own Parish Nursing Program to identify community needs and provide appropriate education and care. In year one alone, the Cruiser expects to serve 500 medically underserved youth.
Though development plans are already underway, donor opportunities still exist. The Foundation For The Carolinas has made the first contribution at the amount of $37,500. "To maximize the impact of the Community Care Cruiser, it truly does take community-wide support," emphasized Boggs. "Together, I know we can rise to the challenge of providing quality medical care to all of our youth." The Presbyterian Hospital Foundation is actively recruiting donations from the community to support the Cruiser.
