CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Presbyterian Healthcare has announced a restructuring of its physician leadership.
A.J. Patefield, M.D. is the new senior vice president for strategy and growth and chief medical officer of the Southern Piedmont Region (SPR) of Novant Health, the Winston-Salem-based parent company of Presbyterian. Dr. Patefield has a history of diverse leadership positions within the organization and will continue to play an important role in physician involvement and the growth of the SPR. "To effectively continue the success of Presbyterain Healthcare and address the increasing number of requests from physicians across the region to partner with Novant, physician leadership will need to continue to evolve. I have complete confidence in the Novant and Presbyterian physician leadership teams to do just that," said Dr. Patefield. The effectiveness of Presbyterian's physician leadership model is demonstrated by the growth of PMG from 161 physicians in January 2003 to approximately 400 affiliated physicians today.
In addition to his support of Presbyterian's growth efforts, Dr. Patefield recently served as co-president of Presbyterian Medical Group (PMG) and lead physician of Presbyterian Pulmonary & Critical Care. He will continue to serve as medical director of the Presbyterian Intensive Care Unit, chairman of the Presbyterian Executive Leadership Group and a member of PMG. In addition, Dr. Patefield will continue to see patients at Presbyterian Pulmonary & Critical Care. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine.
Herbert W. Clegg, II, M.D. is the new president of PMG. In this role, he will lead PMG with the support of the PMG executive committee. Additionally, Dr. Clegg will remain as PMG's pediatrics division chair. He will also continue to see patients at Eastover Pediatrics. Dr. Clegg is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases.
These changes come as a direct result of Presbyterian Healthcare's commitment to being a physician-driven organization, an attribute that allows them to provide their patients with the finest possible medical care. The promotions for Dr. Patefield and Dr. Clegg were preceded by the transitioning into corporate physician leadership positions of T. Hayes Woollen, M.D., formerly PMG co-president with Dr. Patefield, and Stephen Wallenhaupt, M.D., formerly executive vice president for medical affairs of Presbyterian Healthcare.
