CHARLOTTE, NC -- Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care will be hosting its annual children's grief camp, "Sunny Days" on September 23, 2006 at Christ Lutheran Church from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Open to children in kindergarten through fifth grade, camp counselors will teach participants how to cope with the loss of a loved one.
"Its important that children learn that grief is not a process of forgetting, but remembering with less pain," said Reverend Beth Brittain, Sunny Days camp coordinator. "The camp gives children permission to express their feelings surrounding grief, all while reinforcing healthy coping."
Camp counselors and other experts will use an array of techniques to help campers feel comfortable in the grief process. Though the use of games, story telling, arts and crafts, and journaling, children will discover tools to contend with loss. Adult family members are invited to participate in workshops that will teach methods to support children who are grieving.
Campers, their parents and caregivers will honor their loved ones through a release of live butterflies during closing ceremonies.
