CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Presbyterian Cancer Center offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for those living with cancer. Through a rehabilitation and wellness program called Strides to Strength, participants work to overcome one of the most common yet least diagnosed side effects of treatment- fatigue.
Strides to Strength is a 24-session program designed to help its participants reach physical and emotional recovery following a cancer diagnosis. Classes take place twice a week on the sixth floor of the Dowd YMCA and include the following:
-
Personalized fitness planning
- Exercise specialist to accommodate all levels of athletes/non-athletes and facilitate cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training
-
Nutrition planning
- Dietician to provide consultation and interactive cooking classes
-
Recovery planning
- Education and support programs on lymphedema, stress management
Dr. Richard Reiling, medical director for Presbyterian Cancer Center, notes that studies have shown that fatigued cancer patients do not do as well in the long run. It is important for patients to receive complementary sources of healing, such as Strides to Strength, so that recovery can reach its potential.
The Strides to Strength program is so unique that many participants make the drive from outlying areas such as Gastonia, Rock Hill and Huntersville just to attend. Many feel the program offers its own support group because of the services offered and camaraderie felt. One even exclaimed, "Like Nike, just do it. You'll get there and realize the program will be so much better than you thought. Strides to Strength is about more than just exercise; it is about stress and treatment management, nutrition and vitality."
