CHARLOTTE N.C. --Dr. Richard B. Reiling, medical director for Presbyterian Cancer Center, has been elected by the American Medical Association House of Delegates (AMA HOD) to serve on the AMA's Council on Medical Education.
Dr. Reiling was supported and endorsed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), North Carolina Medical Society, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. There were 550 voting members of the AMA HOD that participated in the election.
Although there are several other North Carolina physicians on other AMA councils, Dr. Reiling is the only N.C. physician on the Council on Medical Education and its first surgeon.
"The Council on Medical Education is the AMA's primary source of policy for medical education in the U.S. at all levels: medical schools, residencies, fellowships, and post graduate," says Dr. Reiling.
"I'm honored to be a member of the Council on Medical Education and look forward to discussing issues such as financing tuition costs of medical education, ensuring quality education and support to residents, and the need for significant educational resources in a rapidly evolving technological arena." Dr. Reiling is qualified for the council seat due to his extensive background in teaching, surgical practice, program administration, and active participation in organized medicine.
Dr. Reiling received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1967 and completed his residency at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 1973 in the area of general surgery. He has been active in organized medicine his entire career, serving many years in the ACS. He joined the American AMA HOD in 1994 as an alternate delegate but has been a full delegate since 1996. He most recently served on the Special Advisory Group Extraordinaire (SAGE) and the Committee on Organization of Organizations, and currently represents the AMA on the Commission on Cancer.
