Busy schedules are often the excuse for not making personal health a priority, but with heart disease as the #1 killer of women in America, the Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute is spreading the message that it's time women make heart health a top priority.
On February 25, one of Charlotte's top cardiologists will share that message through an evening healthy educational seminar titled "Caring for Your Heart" at Presbyterian Hospital Matthews, as part of the hospital's 10-year Anniversary Celebration. The free program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. will feature Gary Niess, M.D., cardiologist at Mid Carolina Cardiology.
Dr. Niess will give participants an overview of heart disease and how it affects women differently than men. He will share information on knowing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack in women, and how a woman's anatomy and waiting to receive treatment may affect her outcome.
Most importantly, he will share the newest approaches on how women can prevent heart disease from developing, including the latest on cholesterol and the importance of proper nutrition, exercise and managing stress.
At noon that same day, February 25, Daniel Wise, M.D., cardiologist and medical director of the Presbyterian Center for Preventive Cardiology, will present a similar program that will look at heart disease in both men and women. The afternoon Lunch N' Learn will include a $7 fee for lunch and will cover the risk factors and causes of heart disease. Dr. Wise will also discuss the reasons why people have heart attacks and the newest tests that help identify risk in people without known heart disease.
Registration is required for the lunch and evening program. Call 704-384-CARE to register. Advance payment is required for the lunch program's $7 fee. Once registered, send checks payable to the Health Library, Presbyterian Hospital Matthews, P.O. Box 3310, Matthews, NC, 28106-3310.
Presbyterian Hospital Matthews is celebrating 10 years of serving our community. As part of the celebration, we are hosting a series of educational seminars throughout the year on topics to improve your life and your health.
