The expansion NBA Charlotte Bobcats pick their players in late June and the Charlotte Sting make the third overall selection in the WNBA Draft in mid-April, but the organization today named Presbyterian Hospital the teams' official healthcare provider.

"It is an honor for Presbyterian Hospital to be chosen as the official healthcare provider for the Charlotte Bobcats and Sting," said Carl Armato, Presbyterian Hospital chief executive officer. "We look forward to creating one of the most exciting partnerships between a team and a healthcare organization in all of professional sports."

"Excellent medical care is paramount to team success and Presbyterian Hospital will be a critical element in insuring that our players receive the best medical care available," said Ed Tapscott, Bobcats and Sting chief operating officer. "As we sought a partner for medical services, Presbyterian was a natural choice with its nationally-recognized orthopaedic hospital and community-minded focus. We discovered that they shared a lot of our values, and the Bobcats and Sting look forward to a long partnership together with Presbyterian."

The agreement between Presbyterian and the teams includes health care and treatment for the players and staff of the organizations and Presbyterian will also provide medical services for all events in the new Uptown Arena, set to open in Fall 2005. In fact, the new arena will be linked electronically to Presbyterian Hospital, so that X-ray images can be digitized and transferred instantaneously, allowing medical specialists at Presbyterian Hospital to assist in diagnosis.

The Bobcats, Sting and Presbyterian are committed to helping children, patients and others in the greater Charlotte community attend Bobcats and Sting games when they normally might not have the chance. Additionally, the two organizations will partner to address a community healthcare issue and encourage people to lead healthier and safer lives.

A brand new Presbyterian critical care transport vehicle with the Bobcats and Sting logos was also unveiled today.

Presbyterian Orthopaedic Hospital ranks first in North Carolina for orthopaedic care by the independent national quality rating firm, HealthGrades. Since most sports injuries are orthopaedic in nature, the Bobcats and Sting recognized this ranking as important in their partnership choice.

"In determining our medical needs, we took into account that Presbyterian is the top healthcare system for the type of injuries our players are most likely to have and that made our decision a slam dunk," Tapscott said. "Along with our team physician, Dr. Glenn Perry, Presbyterian is best equipped to help prevent injuries and provide the best possible correction and recovery."

The Bobcats and Sting also today named Dr. Perry, nationally-recognized for his expertise in orthopaedics and sports medicine, as their team physician. He will work closely with Presbyterian Hospital and its staff to provide care for the Bobcats and Sting.

Presbyterian and the Bobcats and Sting have other common ground from aggressive new leadership to their mutual efforts to create new assets for the greater Charlotte community. The Bobcats and Sting will play in a new sports arena for the 2005-06 season, while Presbyterian plans to open a new hospital for the Huntersville community and a new Womens Center by the end of 2004.

"It's exciting to be part of the vision that Bob Johnson has for the Bobcats and Sting, our community and basketball fans around the region," Armato said. "Presbyterian has always been proud of the quality of care provided by its staff."

Now, as one of the Bobcats' and Sting's biggest fans, Presbyterian can share that same level of care with some of Charlotte's newest, and "tallest," residents.
