Presbyterian Healthcare's Certificate of Need to build a 50-bed hospital in Huntersville has been upheld today. Lynda McDaniel, Assistant Secretary for Long Term Care & Family Services in the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, rejected the Administrative Law Judge's November 26, 2002 recommendation that granted summary judgement for Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. The CON was originally issued in May 2002 but was contested by Florida based company Health Management Associates (HMA), who owns Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. An official groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m. on the construction site in Huntersville. Construction activities will begin on the site next week.
"We are happy with the states decision and were ready to begin construction immediately to quickly provide the citizens of North Mecklenburg County with more convenient access to quality healthcare services," said Ed Case, president & CEO of Presbyterian Healthcare. "Although HMA and Lake Norman Regional Medical Center do have the opportunity to continue to oppose this project, we are all hopeful that they will decide to put the needs of the residents of Huntersville first and not appeal this decision," Case added.
"I want to thank everyone who has continued to support this project over the past five years - the citizens of Huntersville, elected officials and physicians," expressed Case.
Construction of the Huntersville hospital is scheduled be completed late 2004. The facility will have a total of 165,000 square feet and cost an estimated $55.7 million. Located in Huntersville at Exit 23 off Interstate 77, the hospital will include an emergency department, five operating rooms and labor and delivery rooms.
