CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Kenneth Durham Weeks, Jr., M.D., FACC, a cardiologist with Mid Carolina Cardiology's Huntersville practice, has been elected a trustee of the Duke Endowment.
"Dr. Weeks has earned broad respect as a physician, mentor, educator and community leader," said Russell M. Robinson II, endowment board chair. "His medical expertise and distinguished military service will add valuable perspectives to our work, particularly in healthcare. We look forward to welcoming him as a colleague on the board."
Weeks began his professional career as a cardiologist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, later serving as director of intern training, assistant chief of medicine and instructor in cardiology. During his military career, he received the Army Commendation and two Meritorious Service Medals, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Medical Corps.
In addition to co-founding Mid Carolina Cardiology in 1988, Weeks has served Presbyterian Hospital in multiple roles, including chief of staff and Novant Health board member. He is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology and will sit for the American Board's exam for special competence in sleep medicine this month.
Weeks was elected to the Davidson College board of trustees in 2003. He also serves on the advisory council for UNC-Charlotte's Center for Professional and Applied Ethics and is in the Leaders Circle of United Way of Central Carolinas. He is an elder at First Presbyterian Church.
Weeks received his medical degree from Duke University Medical School and his bachelor's degree from Davidson College.
He was recognized for outstanding volunteer service at Duke University with the Charles A. Dukes Award in 2005. He has also received the President's Special Award from the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, the Davidson College Alumni Service Award and Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center's Clifford Power Memorial Award for teaching in medicine.
The Duke Endowment, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., seeks to fulfill the legacy of James B. Duke by improving lives and communities in the Carolinas through higher education, healthcare, rural churches and children's services. With assets of over $3 billion, the Endowment has had more than $2.2 billion in grants since in 1924.
