da Vinci Surgical System

Robot-assisted surgery with da Vinci
Presbyterian was the first hospital in the Charlotte region to successfully perform robot-assisted atrial septal defect repair, mitral valve repair and radial prostatectomy surgeries.
Da Vinci surgical system, a computerized surgical system is often referred to as a robot, but is actually controlled by the surgeon. This system integrates the best features of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) with a surgeons skill.
Seated at the console of the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons view a 3-D image of the patients body and use a joystick-like instrument ot manipulate small instruments inserted through the incisions. The robotic arms mimic the natural movements of the hand and fingers. A built-in computer enhances the surgeons hand movements, making them more precise, which is especially important in delicate bypass and valve surgery and can reduce complications for prostate removal.
Patients undergoing robotic-assisted surgery experience a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss and transfusions, less scarring and faster recovery and return to normal daily activities.
Heart and Vascular Surgery
When the valves of the heart collect calcium deposits or no longer close properly, it is necessary to have those valves replaced or repaired. Presbyterian offers this advanced surgical procedure to repair mitral valve prolapse.
The Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute offers this minimally invasive surgery option to repair atrial septal defects.
