Take the first step toward a healthy and fulfilling pregnancy by taking advantage of Presbyterian's maternity classes.

Below are descriptions of our programs and classes. You may check our Calendar of Events for dates and times of each class.

Maternity Tour
You and your family are welcome to tour Presbyterian Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital Matthews or Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville. These free tours are offered both evenings and weekends. To schedule, call 704-384-4949.
Positively Pregnant!
This two-session class, which meets once a month, prepares new Moms and Dads for a healthy and positive start to the pregnancy. Topics include normal physical and emotional changes of pregnancy, fetal development, healthy food choices, relief measures for common discomforts, signs of pre-term labor and general health concerns. Fee for class.
Childbirth Preparation
Designed for a two-day weekend session or five evening session, this class helps the expectant mom and support person learn what to expect during labor and delivery, signs of early labor, Lamaze relaxation and breathing techniques, Ceasarean birth and pain management choices. Important information is given on infant care, safety and adjusting to parenthood. Includes video presentations and class material. Fee for class.
Cesarean Birth and Vaginal Birth After Cesarean
Written information will be sent to you in the mail. After you have read the material, nurses from our Women's Health Education Department are available to discuss your questions by phone or you may set up a personal appointment to view a video.
Childbirth Refresher
A one-session class for those who have had a previous childbirth preparation or Lamaze class in the past. Fee for class.
Nutrition Counseling
This is for expectant mothers who want more information or guidance about their diet and nutrition. Appointments are made with our registered dietitian and special counseling is available for women with special needs. This includes women who are expecting multiples, or have a vegetarian diet. Fee for class.
Bedrest Basket
This is a program for pregnant women who need to spend the rest of their pregnancy on bedrest. We know this may cause feelings of confusion, anxiety and loneliness, so we have prepared a basket of literature and videos on labor and your new baby to help you pass the time and prepare for your new arrival. The baskets rent for $20 per week. To make your reservation, call 704-384-7510.
Breastfeeding Classes
A one-session class for moms and their partners to learn more about breastfeeding basics and techniques. Learn how to read your baby's cues, determine if breastfeeding is going well, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and how to identify and manage breastfeeding challenges. Class is taught through Presbyterian Nursing Mother's Place by certified lactation consultant. Fee for class.
Breastfeeding and Pumping: Beyond the First 3 Months
This one-session class is taught by a board certified lactation consultant. It provides information on the benefits of breast milk after the first three months of life, pumping for return to work, school or everyday life, breast milk collection and storage. Quiet babies in arms welcome. Class length is 90 minutes. $30.
Infant/Child CPR and Safety
This one-time session teaches parents infant and child safety, CPR techniques and provides hands-on practice with a model. This class does not provide certification in infant and child CPR. Fee for class.
Parents with Siblings
This one-session program helps prepare brothers and sister for the new baby. Parent watch their children learn how to diaper and hold the baby. A Family Maternity Center tour included. Recommended for children ages 3-10. Class is free.
Grandparents Class & Tour
Grandparents learn about today's childbearing practices and infant care routines. A tour of the Family Maternity Center is included. Fee for class.
Infant Massage Class
Our certified infant massage instructor will teach you the latest massage techniques for your baby. The program includes four, one-hour sessions for parents with babies from 6 weeks to 9 months or crawling age. Fee for class.
Parenting Your Newborn
Two two-hour sessions to provide the expectant/new mom and support person with the tools to parent a newborn successfully. Taught by a certified parenting educator, the classes give parents the opportunity to ask questions and to prepare for life's changes that occur after childbirth. Topics include styles of parenting, bonding, infant development, creative play for infants, sleep techniques, scheduling and self-care. The first class is suggested during the eighth month of pregnancy (or 36 weeks), and the second class is suggested 3-4 weeks after delivery. Fee.
