Urology is the branch of medicine concerned with the urinary tract in both men and women. According to the National Kidney Foundation, kidney and urologic diseases affect more than 13 million people (about 5 percent of the US population) and claim about 260,000 lives annually. The number of people affected by these diseases is expected to grow as the populations of older adults and racial and ethnic minorities increase.
The urologic surgical procedures that are practiced regularly at Presbyterian include:
An adrenalectomy is the removal or partial removal of one or both adrenal glands.
A cystoscopy is procedure that examines the bladder and urinary tract for abnormalities or obstructions, such as tumors or stones.
A laparoscopic nephrectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing a kidney.
Prostatectomy is the surgical removal of the prostate using computer-enhanced technology and the surgeon's skill.
Percutaneous renal stone surgery is usually performed to remove larger kidney stones.
This procedure removes the renal pelvis, kidney and entire ureter, along with the bladder cuff.
Ureteroscopy is an examination that inserts a scope through the bladder, into the ureter, and then into the kidney if necessary to remove ureteral or kidney stones.
Surgical options are available to correct or ease the symptoms of urinary incontinence.
