Screening Mammograms
Screening mammograms are for women who do not have significant symptoms, such as a lump or a black or bloody nipple discharge. Women with these symptoms should have a diagnostic mammogram, a test that must be scheduled by a physician.
Diagnostic Mammograms
A diagnostic mammogram is performed under the direct supervision of the radiologist. Diagnostic mammography consists of verification, localization and characterization of breast abnormalities and uses a variety of tools to evaluate abnormalities.
Digital Mammograms
Presbyterian now offers digital mammography, the latest advancement in the early detection of breast cancer. New digital capabilities will enable the technologist to immediately view images on the screen, thereby reducing the amount of time spent in the imaging suite and the need for retakes.
Digital mammography may be more accurate in screening women:
  • Under the age of 50
  • Of any age with very dense or extremely dense breast tissue
  • Pre- or perimenopausal women of any age
Other Diagnostic Tools
In addition to routine mammography, other diagnostic tools include physical examination, special mammographic views, ultrasound, short-term follow-up, fine needle aspiration, pneumocystography, galactography, core needle biopsy, (stereotactic or ultrasound guided) MRI and Sestamibi breast imaging. The results are given to the patient at the conclusion of the exam.
Mammogram Preparation and Instructions
  • Please come 15 to 20 minutes before your appointment time to allow you to register.
  • Please do not wear powder or deoderant to your appointment.
  • It is preferred that you wear two-piece clothing.
  • Please bring your insurance information.

You should receive the results of your mammogram by mail in seven to 10 days. It may take longer, if previous films have to be obtained from another facility.
