Special Programs
Child Life Specialists are members of the healthcare team who are sensitive to, and focus on, the needs of hospitalized children. The Hemby Child Life Specialist team works with a variety of nonprofits to bring special programs to our pediatric patients.
Arts for Life provides daily visual art, music, photography, and creative writing lessons, and art support groups to children, adolescents, and young adults battling cancer, life-threatening diseases, and other disabilities. Arts for Life offers programs at four hospitals across North Carolina: Presbyterian, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Duke and Mission Hospitals.
The Victory Junction Gang Camp enriches the lives of children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses by providing life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun, and empowering, in a safe and medically sound environment.
The mission of Rainbows of Love is to give a personalized pillowcase to each child diagnosed with cancer in North Carolina. This project is dedicated to the children and their families who are struggling with cancer and the doctors and nurses who become their second family.
The "I'm a Kool Kid" Foundation is a group of volunteers committed to improving the lives of children with caner and other life-threatening illnesses. Created in August 1998, as a not-for-profit organization, the foundation provides hospitalized children "treasured gifts" in a very special and unique way.
Starlight Starbright brings together experts from pediatric health care, technology, and entertainment to create programs that educate, entertain and inspire seriously ill children. Starlight, Starbright has provided Hemby Children's Hospital with Fun Stations (mobile entertainment units containing a flat-screen television, DVD player, and Nintendo GameCube system) to help children cope with the stresses of being in the hospital.
The Children's Wish Foundation is determined to bring happiness to seriously ill children around the world. They work with Hemby to fulfill wishes for seriously ill patients.
Hemby Children's Hospital participates in two of the Kids Wish Networks programs: Holidays of Hope gift bank provides a once yearly event where patients are treated to gifts, entertainment, special guests and a much-needed break from medical treatment. The Hero of the Month program enables a child with a non-life threatening illness to be nominated for their bravery while in the hospital.
Chemo Duck is a cuddly stuffed pal who can educate children about cancer treatment protocol. He comes dressed in pajamas and a bandana and even wears a chemo port and an immobilizer.
Every year Mrs. Grossman's sends more than 6,000,000 stickers to more than 300 pediatric hospitals and cancer camps for children. The artwork and stories that are sent back to the company are exhibited in the company's Gallery of Love.
