| Presbyterian's Hemby Intensive Care Nursery is a Level IV Nursery, the highest designation for treating premature and critically ill newborns. |
The Nursery offers parents peace-of-mind, knowing that high quality medical and nursing care is available around-the-clock, should any medical necessity arise following birth.
The Intensive Care Nursery has access to various consultants and services that allow treatment of the full range of neonatal problems. A staff of board-certified neonataologists, pediatricians, specially-trained neonatal nurse practitioners and registered nurses bring the most sophisticated expertise in newborn medicine available. At least one neonataologist is in the hospital 24 hours a day and a respiratory therapist is continually assigned to the nursery.
In addition to a high-level of medical and nursing care, the family-oriented nursery provides an atmosphere conducive to healing and well-being. Our compassion and caring attention helps infants and families get through this often difficult time. Parents are considered part of the care team and are encouraged to visit frequently. As infants improve, parents can provide feedings to their baby as appropriate.
Visiting is permitted at all times except during the nursing shift change, which is 6:30-7:30 in the morning and evening. Family, including siblings at least 12 years of age, and friends may visit, but they must be accompanied by a parent.
Parents can also receive comfort and encouragement through a support group where parents gather to talk about their situation or meet with experts who may talk about relevant subjects.
A multidisciplinary discharge team helps facilitate the baby's transition from hospital to home. A medical social worker will help obtain insurance approval for home medications, equipment and skilled care when necessary. And for parents who need help transitioning their baby to a home environment, we offer The Parent's Place. This mini-apartment located in the hospital allows parents to practice the skills they will need to care for their baby at home.
