Pacemaker Implantation
| Pacemakers are tiny devices that keep the heart beating properly. Individuals often develop slower heart rates as a result of normal aging or by experiencing damage to the heart. |
The Presbyterian Cardiovascular Institute offers pacemaker implantation. During this surgical procedure, the device is inserted beneath the skin to continuously monitor the heart's rhythm and sends electrical impulses when it detects the heart beating too slowly.
Pacemakers are small, battery-operated devices that send painless electrical impulses through an electrode placed in the heart to help the heart beat properly. When the heartbeat is above a certain level, most pacemakers turn themselves off and then reactivate when the heart slows down again.
Pacemakers are used in patients with slow heart rates, which can occur as a part of the normal aging process or because of damage to the heart.
