Postmenopausal Treatment of Breast Cancer Changes Again!
Learn about this change in the standard of care for breast cancer patients.
April 28, 2004
The use of tamoxifen (Nolvadex) in postmenopausal women with breast cancer has been the standard of care for quite awhile.
Originally, women were told that the tamoxifen would be used for life. In the early ninties this was changed to five years. Now a well controlled study indicates that women should be switched over to exemestane (Aromasin) after two to three years. This latter change significantly improved the disease-free survival in these women.
This changeover, however, does not come without a cost. Aromasin will cost about 10X that of generic tamoxifen, that is about $250 per month. Women who are in this situation should discuss the options with their physicians.
