Many colorectal conditions can be addressed using minimally invasive methods. However, some colorectal cancers, obstructions or inflammatory bowel disease may require larger incisions to remove the damaged areas for bowel function and disease treatment.
Colon Resections
Our experienced surgeons may use laparoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that allows for quicker recovery and fewer complications, to address your condition. Your procedure will depend on your medical circumstances, and we will work with you to choose the best one for your situation. A colon resection may be considered if you have colon cancer, diverticular disease, an intestinal blockage, ulcerative colitis or other traumatic injuries.
Colostomy/Ileostomy
Novant Health surgeons may choose to create an intestinal opening for waste to exit the body without using the rectum or anus. A colostomy diverts the contents of the large intestine to the new opening (stoma), while an ileostomy diverts the contents of the small intestine.
Hemorrhoid Procedure
Hemorrhoids may swell or collapse, causing pain or bleeding. Our colorectal surgeons can employ a procedure to surgically remove them.
Rectopexy
Sometimes the rectum may lose support and detach, exiting the body. Novant Health doctors can perform laparoscopic surgery to reattach the rectum. In more severe cases, surgeons may need to perform a traditional rectopexy, which requires a larger incision.
